Bohol - A Trip to Remember!

Last year, my husband and I, had finally set foot in Bohol to celebrate fiesta with my husband's relatives in Balilihan. The fiesta is held every 16th of July in honor of their patron, Virgin of Carmel. Three months prior to the fiesta, I was able to get a roundtrip promo airfare via Air Philippines that cost 1700 pesos, from Davao to Cebu and vice-versa, and we decided to travel by boat via Light Shipping (click ferry schedule) from Cebu City pier to Tagbiliran Bohol.

Here's a Map from Cebu to Bohol.

I could attest that Fiesta in Bohol was amazingly different than the fiesta we used to celebrate here in Davao. Boholanos who work outside Bohol and those who work abroad return home to their native land, not only for the fiesta celebration but also for their families. There's even a joke, that Boholanos just come home every fiesta to renew their "cedula", but the reason behind is much deeper. They come home to bond with their families after not seeing each other for a long time.

The relatives of my husband, whom we visited during the Fiesta, prepared us different kind of menus out of carabao meat (water buffalo meat). At first, I was hesitant to eat buffalo because according to "hearsays", it could trigger diseases. But as a respect, I tried to eat a little. Of course Fiesta would not be complete without lechon (roasted pig).  I was amazed of their preparations, even the day before the actual day of celebration or festivity (bisperas), was already the start of eating, drinking and other merry-making. You'll never go hungry when you'll celebrate fiesta with Boholoanos for they celebrated it for a week-long!

 Bohol Main Attractions

  1. Sagbayan Peak

Vacation to Bohol would not be complete without visiting their tourist attractions. One of these is Sagbayan Peak. A day after the fiesta, my husband's cousin lend us their car so we could tour around.  Those who don't have cars, you could rent a van. Price might range from 2000-3000 pesos.  We first visited Sagbayan Peak, a mountain resort in Sagbayan town. The peak has a restaurant and a children’s park with Bugs Bunny, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and various other Toontown figures. The entrance fee is very cheap, costing 25 pesos per person. From afar, you could see the wonder and beauty of chocolate hills and a sea that separates Bohol and Cebu. Perfect for unwinding from a hustle and a bustle of a city life!

2. Tarsier

Tarsier is the smallest primate, smaller than an adult's hand. Sagbayan peak has a tarsier sunctuary and we were so lucky that we were able to hold it and take a picture with tarsier. According to the care-taker who made the tarsier perched on my arms,  staying longer in the sunctuary is not allowed for it will stress out the tarsiers and has tendency to die.

3. Baclayon Church

The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Baclayon is considered to be one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. We just passed by here and did not get a chance to enter into the church since we were hurrying that time to catch other tourist attraction.

4. Chocolate Hills

It is one of the famous attractions, located at Barangay Buenos Aires, Chocolate Hills Complex Carmen Bohol.  It is the main tourist destination for best viewing of chocolate hills.  You need to take about 200 steps in going up so you can view the hills, 360 degrees. In between of the stairs alongside, there are sheds where you can stop and rest for awhile. When I was a kid, I just saw it in the postcard and thought of climbing it if I could go there one day! But when I saw the real hills, right infront of me, I said "wow", how I could climb there, the hills were so tall.

Other must-see destinations in Bohol

We haven't gone to these places due to time and money constraint but we promise to visit them, 2-3 years from now.  When you are in Bohol, you should not miss visiting these places.

a. Floating Restaurant in Loboc River
b. Panglao Beach Resort
c. Danao
d. Bilar
e. Hinagdanan Cave

Bohol Delicacies

Before going home to Davao, we brought Pasalubongs - bring home gifts to our family after a trip. One is Calamay. It is a combination of glutinous rice, sugar, coconut milk and some peanuts. It is enclosed in a coconut shell, tied with a red band. Calamay is very known across the city - but they said, nothing really beats the Calamay from Jagna - another town in Bohol. Aside from calamay, we also bought peanut kisses and Sanga - a known dried fish in Bohol.
